Sustrato
2021

Sustrato is an experimental design project that transforms agroindustrial waste from the pineapple industry into biomaterials and sustainable products.

In Mexico, organic residues are often classified as "non-reusable" under the national waste management program, discouraging industries from managing their organic waste. This project focuses on the pineapple industry in Ciudad Isla, Veracruz, which is the country’s main production and has over 3,000 producers. Here, the discarded pineapple leaves represent around 80% of the plant’s biomass and can amount to up to one tonne per day per company.

Through collaborative research, local knowledge, and material experimentation, four biomaterials were developed from pineapple leaf fibre and bagasse: felt,
an agglomerated composite, rope, and bioplastic. Each material was tested for specific properties and applications. The felt and agglomerated composite demonstrated excellent sound absorption and was used to design acoustic panels and screens. The bioplastic, which degrades naturally in less than two years, was applied to create envelopes and packaging. Meanwhile, the rope was refined to improve its strength and usability.

Sustrato aims to maximise the value of agroindustrial organic waste by offering local producers innovative waste management solutions and creating new avenues for income and employment, highlighting the potential of sustainable product development rooted in regional resources.
This project began during my BA studies as a Graduation Project developed under the guidance of Edith Medina, Joel Escalona, and José de la O. It evolved over the following years as a material research and product development initiative in collaboration with pineapple producers from Ciudad Isla, Veracruz, Mexico.

In 2021, Sustrato was selected as one of the 10 winners of the No Waste Challenge by What Design Can Do, and in 2023, it was one of the winners of Entrepreneurhers. Additionally, during the same year, the material experimentation focusing on its acoustic properties progressed through my participation in the cultural program Jóvenes Creadores under the guidance of Ana Paula Alatriste. Through this program, Fibrato, a collection of acoustic panels. was designed.

Sustrato has been presented at several design events and venues, including Dutch Design Week, Museo Franz Mayer, Marta Herford Museum, Dubai Design Week, and What Design Can Do Mexico 2022.
