Unexpected Strength2020
The stark realities of gender discrimination, as experienced by the women in the communities around me, inspired the creation of a deeply symbolic object: a rope woven from the donated human hair of female friends, relatives, and activists.
Through an extensive survey of how gender discrimination affects women in Mexico City, common experiences were documented. The research revealed how prejudices and stereotypes undermine and permeate women’s everyday lives. At the same time, it highlighted a strong resistance to the status quo, a growing sense of solidarity among women, and the emergence of activism. The rope itself is a symbol of femininity—often fetishised or commodified. In this work, it becomes a metaphor for the interconnectedness of the female community. The hair was gathered from close women and activists who are at the forefront of creating change.
This project was presented at the True Matter exhibition of Dutch Invertuals Academy during Dutch Design Week 2020 as part of a digital showcase.
